Playboy Presents Faces of Resilience: Gaby Garcia Vera, the Faithful

Gaby Garcia-Vera has learned that one does not need to abandon one’s faith to be an LGBTQ advocate. But that journey of reconciling his faith and religion with his true identity was not easy. Luckily, because of the strength of his character, and his resilience, today, Garcia-Vera is proud to share his story. Such stories are all the more important when the relationship between sexuality, religion and morality remains tense and create ideologies of shame. Many of those ideologies explain why conversion therapy on LGBTQ minors is still legal in more than 30 states.

Playboy magazine profiled six people—both survivors and LGBTQ activists, including Gaby Garcia-Vera—who are working everyday to end the practice of conversion therapy in the U.S. The feature, “Faces of Resilience” appears in Playboy’s Summer 2019 quarterly, “On Gender and Sexuality.” These six brave people inspired Playboy to launch its PRIDE IS GOOD campaign in support of The Trevor Project’s 50 Bills 50 States campaign. Playboy Presents Faces of Resilience: Veronica Kennedy, the Mother

As an adolescent friend of Matthew Shepard, Veronica Kennedy has been part of the fight for LGBTQ equality for decades. As a mother, she works everyday to encourage other parents to be an advocate and join the fight. That is all the more important in a time when LGBTQ youth are not protected from conversion therapy practices in more than 30 states.

Playboy Presents Faces of Resilience: Peter Nunn, the Survivor

A survivor of conversion therapy, Peter Nunn today uses his experiences and resilience to inspire others and help enact legislation that’ll protect LGBTQ minors from the discredited practice of conversion therapy. His story is one of bravery, hope and love, and his strength while sharing it encapsulates the meaning of Pride.

Playboy Presents Faces of Resilience: Sam Brinton, the Advocate

As Head of Advocacy and Government Affairs at The Trevor Project, advocate Sam Brinton uses their pride and story of resilience every day to inspire and activate lawmakers, activists and allies in the fight to end conversion therapy practices in the U.S. and around the world. As one of the architects of The Trevor Project’s 50 Bills 50 States campaign, Brinton’s goal is to enact legislation in every jurisdiction that will protect LGBTQ minors from conversion therapy.
