In 1991, Caroline “Tula” Cossey made history as the first openly transgender woman to pose nude in Playboy—but her story with us began a decade earlier, when she appeared in our pages as a Bond girl promoting “For Your Eyes Only.”

After the world outed her, Playboy gave Tula a platform to tell her own story on her own terms. “It gave people the chance to get to know me, to feel the situation and hopefully gain empathy and understanding. That was my goal, and Playboy was a great platform for that.”
