Playboy Presents Faces of Resilience: Gaby Garcia Vera, the Faithful

Gaby Garcia-Vera has learned that one does not need to abandon one’s faith to be an LGBTQ advocate. But that journey of reconciling his faith and religion with his true identity was not easy. Luckily, because of the strength of his character, and his resilience, today, Garcia-Vera is proud to share his story. Such stories are all the more important when the relationship between sexuality, religion and morality remains tense and create ideologies of shame. Many of those ideologies explain why conversion therapy on LGBTQ minors is still legal in more than 30 states.

Playboy magazine profiled six people—both survivors and LGBTQ activists, including Gaby Garcia-Vera—who are working everyday to end the practice of conversion therapy in the U.S. The feature, “Faces of Resilience” appears in Playboy’s Summer 2019 quarterly, “On Gender and Sexuality.” These six brave people inspired Playboy to launch its PRIDE IS GOOD campaign in support of The Trevor Project’s 50 Bills 50 States campaign. Playboy Partners With The Trevor Project to Present “Faces of Resilience”

Our contributors remind us that enjoying sexual freedom means defending the rights of all genders and identities. As we celebrate the richness of different lived experiences, we are energized by the opportunity to come out formally for what we believe. And so, inspired by a 1969 Letter to the Editor that warned against the dangers of conversion therapy, let this be an announcement that proudly reminds the world where PLAYBOY stands: Gay is good.

Which leads us to Faces of Resilience, an editorial dedication to the warriors who have survived conversion therapy and those who are fighting, state by state, to ban the practice nationwide. With editorial guidance from the Trevor Project, an organization supporting at-risk LGBTQ youth, PLAYBOY is proud to spotlight these change-makers.

PRIDE IS GOOD

Today, Playboy is committing to ending conversion therapy across the United States. Today, we launch the PRIDE IS GOOD campaign in support of The Trevor Project’s 50 Bills 50 States initiative. Fifty years after the Stonewall riots launched the LGBTQ rights movement, we’re calling on all to be inspired by the 1950s “Gay Is Good” rallying cry and fight back against conversion therapy and its ideology of shame.

To raise awareness and to support The Trevor Project its work to end conversion therapy, we commissioned seven queer artists to reimagine the iconic Bunny ears for an exclusive collection. There is still work to do before the dignity and the sexual freedom of all people is secured, and we will not rest until it’s done. So wear your ears with pride. These curated pieces represent Playboy’s “call to ears.” Join our community of allies.
