Playboy Presents Faces of Resilience: Gaby Garcia Vera, the Faithful

Gaby Garcia-Vera has learned that one does not need to abandon one’s faith to be an LGBTQ advocate. But that journey of reconciling his faith and religion with his true identity was not easy. Luckily, because of the strength of his character, and his resilience, today, Garcia-Vera is proud to share his story. Such stories are all the more important when the relationship between sexuality, religion and morality remains tense and create ideologies of shame. Many of those ideologies explain why conversion therapy on LGBTQ minors is still legal in more than 30 states.

Playboy magazine profiled six people—both survivors and LGBTQ activists, including Gaby Garcia-Vera—who are working everyday to end the practice of conversion therapy in the U.S. The feature, “Faces of Resilience” appears in Playboy’s Summer 2019 quarterly, “On Gender and Sexuality.” These six brave people inspired Playboy to launch its PRIDE IS GOOD campaign in support of The Trevor Project’s 50 Bills 50 States campaign.
