Dusty Ray Bottoms first revealed his experience as a survivor of conversion therapy as a contestant on season 10 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” putting a rare, national spotlight on the dangerous and discredited practice. Since then, Dusty has gone on to speak openly and often about his experience, hoping to inspire other survivors and help end conversion therapy in the U.S.

Playboy magazine profiled six people—both survivors and LGBTQ activists, including Dusty Ray Bottoms—who are working everyday to end the practice of conversion therapy in the U.S. The feature, “Faces of Resilience” appears in Playboy’s Summer 2019 quarterly, “On Gender and Sexuality.” These six brave people also inspired Playboy to launch its PRIDE IS GOOD campaign in support of The Trevor Project’s 50 Bills 50 States campaign. A marriage and family therapy, and International Mr. Leather 2017, Dr. Ralph Bruneau has first-hand knowledge of the long-term effects of rejection, shame and fear on LGBTQ people. That is why his motto at Mr. IML 2017 was “Born Perfect.” As both a mental health professional and a 30-year LGBTQ advocate, and as someone who witnessed the tragedies of the AIDs crisis, Dr. Bruneau knows the necessity of being resilient.

Our contributors remind us that enjoying sexual freedom means defending the rights of all genders and identities. As we celebrate the richness of different lived experiences, we are energized by the opportunity to come out formally for what we believe. And so, inspired by a 1969 Letter to the Editor that warned against the dangers of conversion therapy, let this be an announcement that proudly reminds the world where PLAYBOY stands: Gay is good.

To raise awareness and to support The Trevor Project its work to end conversion therapy, we commissioned seven queer artists to reimagine the iconic Bunny ears for an exclusive collection. There is still work to do before the dignity and the sexual freedom of all people is secured, and we will not rest until it’s done. So wear your ears with pride. These curated pieces represent Playboy’s “call to ears.” Join our community of allies.
